====================================== Dexter Cattle: The Ultimate "Dual-Purpose" Small Breed of Cattle for Small Acreages Originally the Dexter cattle are from the Southern part of Ireland. The first recorded importations of Dexters to the USA arrived between 1905 and 1915 and numbered about 200 head. From the latest information on the Dexter cattle website, about 6,000 are in the USA today and about 15,000 head worldwide. In 2000, the ADCA had about 650 members and 852 cattle registered. Dexter cattle are used for milk and beef production, with a few used for Draft. The Dexter is agile, intelligent, trainable, easy calving, are excellent parents, and are docile. Approved colors are Black, Red, and Dun. They are available as either horned or polled. At 3 years old, Bulls should weigh not more than 1,000 pounds (38 to 44" high at the shoulder). Cows should not weigh not more than 750 pounds (36 to 42" high at the shoulder). Breeders are found world wide.
